A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
